NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the an approach in psychology in which, we connect thinking (neurological processes), what we say (linguistics) and incorporate it with behavioral patterns from experience (programming). All three can be changed or tweaked to achieve important goals in life.
The idea started in the 1970's in which researchers began collecting patterns from successful people. What makes them tick? Why do people like them? Why did it seem that they can earn money or fortune easier than most people? Why they seem to be happier? Researchers was able to come up with an approach: That if you CHANGE the way you think and speak, your perception of your world also changes.

Let us begin with how you see the world. We all see the realities of the world differently. We all perceive what is true based on our senses (sight, hearing, taste... etc), how we feel, what our pre-programmed values are or belief systems are and etc.
In short, the way you see the problem is just one side. Your side. Your friends, mentors or a life therapist may allow you to see the other sides of your situation, giving you more options... so you can solve them on your own.
I have here a sample exercise, let's say you want to get over somebody you used to love. You can try do this on your own. Take time to visualize the image in each process.
1. When you see him/her in your mind, let must assume that you see him/her in-front of you. How large is his/her image in your mind? How does it make you feel?
2. Make the image smaller, smaller smaller.
3. Make the image black and white.
4. If the image is moving, make it stop.
5. Now, using an imaginary pen marker, draw doodles on his/her face. Make the image least heavily doddled. You can also put something that turns you off like pimples or flabs.
6. When you are done and satisfied, check how you feel.
7. Blur the image. Blur the image some more.
8. How does it make you feel now?
